JHALOKATI — Residents of villages hit by Sugandha river erosion in Jhalokati’s Nalchhiti upazila held a human chain Friday accusing successive governments of failing to take effective measures to stop the erosion.
The protest was held Friday afternoon, Jan. 16, on the bank of the Sugandha river at Saroi in Kulkathi union. Residents of Saroi and Baroikoran villages took part.
Speakers said hundreds of families had been losing homes, land and livelihoods to river erosion for years. Many had been displaced more than once and were living in extreme hardship, they said, yet no permanent solution had been undertaken. They demanded immediate steps to halt the erosion.
Among those who spoke were Khokon Howlader, a former member of the Baroikoran ward; Saroi residents Shahin Talukdar, Abdul Quddus, Shahjahan Talukdar, Sohrab Hossain and Abdul Rashid Molla; and Jalal Uddin Khan Shahin.
