Two former Awami League-linked leaders detained in Jhalokati

JHALOKATI — Police in Jhalokati’s Kanthalia upazila have detained two former leaders of Ulama League and Jubo League on allegations of involvement with the banned Awami League.

The two were detained in separate raids in the upazila on Monday night, Jan. 5, said Abu Naser Mohammad Raihan, the officer-in-charge of Kanthalia police station.

Those detained are Maulana Delwar Hossain, 56, former president of the Kanthalia upazila Ulama League; and Maharaj Mallick, 44, former general secretary of a ward Jubo League unit in Patikhalghata union.

Police said Delwar Hossain was detained from the upazila bus stand area and Mallick from the Jhorkhali bazaar area. Delwar Hossain, a resident of Moshabunia village in the upazila, also works as an assistant professor at Chingrakhali Senior Madrasa. Mallick is a resident of Patikhalghata union.

Raihan said the two had been detained for alleged involvement in the political activities of the banned Awami League. Further legal action was being processed, he said.
