Pickup driver killed in bus-pickup collision in Sunamganj

SUNAMGANJ — A pickup van driver was killed and at least eight people injured when an Ena Paribahan bus collided with a pickup van on the Sunamganj-Sylhet regional highway, police said.

The accident took place Saturday morning, Jan. 17, in the Gobindaganj Ghorargaon area of Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj. The bus plunged into a small roadside canal and the pickup was completely crushed.

Witnesses said an Ena Paribahan bus traveling from Dhaka toward Sunamganj collided with a pickup van coming from the opposite direction. The pickup driver died at the scene.

Seven to eight others were injured in the crash, police said. Two of the seriously injured were sent to Sylhet M A G Osmani Medical College Hospital. The Ena bus driver was also among the injured.

Residents rushed to free passengers trapped inside the bus, and a Fire Service unit later joined the rescue operation, police said.

Sumon Kumar Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Jaykals Highway police station, confirmed the incident.
