SUNAMGANJ — Police in Shalla upazila of Sunamganj arrested three people and seized 46 kg of cannabis worth about 15 lakh taka in two raids that ran from Tuesday evening through Wednesday dawn, police said.

Acting on intelligence, officers arrested Jahirul Islam, 36, son of Abdul Monnas of Ujangaon village, with 45 kg of cannabis, police sources said. In a separate raid the same night at 3:30 a.m., police arrested two known drug dealers from Daulatpur village — Ujjala Begum, 37, and Rup Mia alias Ruikka, 50 — with 1 kg of cannabis.

Residents said although drug traders have long been active in Shalla, such a large consignment being seized at once is rare. The police action has brought relief to the community over drug trafficking, they said.

Md. Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shalla police station, said the raids were carried out on specific intelligence that a large cannabis consignment was headed to the area. “In two separate raids we were able to arrest three drug dealers with cannabis worth about 15 lakh taka,” he said. Two separate cases have been filed against them under the Narcotics Control Act, he added.
