SUNAMGANJ — One person was killed and several others injured in a clash between two rival groups in Lakshmipur village of Sunamganj’s Jamalganj upazila over a long-standing dispute, police said.
The dead man was identified as Sejaul Islam Kala Mia, 35, son of the late Mujibur Rahman of Lakshmipur village. The clash took place on Friday afternoon. Police arrested four people on suspicion of involvement.
Police and local sources said a long-running dispute had existed between union council member Kamrul Islam and Abdul Matin, both residents of Lakshmipur village. The two sides had clashed before over the dispute. On Friday morning, villagers settled the matter through arbitration when tensions appeared to flare, but the two groups clashed again in the afternoon. Kala Mia was critically wounded by a sharp weapon and died on his way to a hospital. Other injured people have been admitted to various hospitals.
Joynal Hossain, the officer-in-charge for investigation at Jamalganj police station, said one person was killed and several injured in the clash stemming from the long-standing dispute. Four people have been detained on suspicion of involvement, he said. The situation in the village is now calm.
