SUNAMGANJ — Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Shishir Monir in the Sunamganj-2 (Dirai-Shalla) constituency said he will take a large bouquet to his opponent’s home if he loses the election, and hopes his opponent will do the same for him.
Speaking to reporters after the symbol allocation ceremony on Wednesday, Jan. 21, Monir said he would congratulate whoever wins a free and fair election. He said Bangladesh would only return to its old ways without benefit if a new political culture is not built.
“Even if I lose, I have no objection to congratulating the winning candidate,” he said. “And if I win, I have no objection to working with the other candidates. We will gladly accept whatever verdict the people deliver.”
Stressing the need to move away from abusive and quarrelsome politics, Monir said a healthy political culture is essential for the peace of those who have given their lives for the country.
Separately, symbols have been allocated to 23 candidates contesting the five constituencies of Sunamganj in the 13th national parliamentary election. The allocation began at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the conference room of the district commissioner and returning officer in Sunamganj. Candidates from various political parties and independents were given symbols such as the sheaf of paddy, scales, eagle and hand fan. Although several candidates raised complaints about code of conduct compliance and a level playing field, the returning officer said equal opportunity was being maintained.
