SUNAMGANJ — Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has recovered 24 electric detonators from a Bangladesh-India border area in Sunamganj’s Tahirpur upazila, raising fears of sabotage in the region, security officials said.

Acting on intelligence, the Sunamganj Battalion (28 BGB) carried out a special search operation around 8 a.m. Friday in the border area under the jurisdiction of the Charagaon Border Out Post in Tahirpur upazila, BGB sources said. Officers recovered the 24 electric detonators at a place called Maizhati, about 30 yards inside Bangladesh from border pillar 1195/1-S, wrapped in polythene and hidden under tree branches.

The BGB said the recovered detonators could be used to make powerful improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that could pose a serious threat to public safety and national stability. Authorities initially suspect the explosives were being smuggled into Bangladesh to destabilize the prevailing situation in the country, BGB said. Legal action on the recovered explosives is under way.
