SUNAMGANJ — A 35-year-old woman was hacked to death by her nephew in Niamatpur village of Sunamganj’s Doarabazar upazila on Friday night after she protested his indecent behavior, police said.
The victim, Rukshana Begum, was the wife of Md. Firiz Ali, a resident of Niamatpur village in Dohalia union.
Police and local sources said Jasim Uddin, 26, son of the late Waris Ali, had long been behaving improperly toward his aunt. Although the matter had been raised several times in village arbitrations, his behavior did not change.
On Friday night, when Rukshana stepped onto her veranda, Jasim made indecent gestures toward her, police said. When she protested, Jasim grew enraged, brought a machete from the house and struck her repeatedly on the head and body, leaving her critically wounded. Neighbors rushed in when they heard her screams, and Jasim fled.
Bleeding heavily, Rukshana was given initial treatment locally and then taken to Sylhet M A G Osmani Medical College Hospital, where she died around 11 p.m.
Jahidul Haque, officer-in-charge of Doarabazar police station, said police visited the scene as soon as they learned of the incident and efforts to arrest the fugitive nephew are continuing.
