Villagers beat two suspected cattle thieves to death in Singair

SINGAIR, Manikganj — Two suspected thieves were beaten to death by villagers while trying to steal cattle in Singair upazila of Manikganj.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at Sajer Mora three-way intersection in Joymontop Union of Singair upazila.

The dead are Majnu, 27, son of Tota Mia of neighboring Dashani village, and Din Islam, 22, son of Bandhu Mia of Choyani village.

Locals said a five-member gang of thieves was attempting to break the lock at the home of Younus Mia in nearby Imamnagar village to steal cattle when residents heard the noise and raised an alarm. Villagers from the surrounding area rushed to the scene. The locals collectively caught two of the five thieves and beat them. Police took the seriously injured pair to a hospital, where doctors declared both dead.

Police sources said multiple theft cases were pending against Majnu and Din Islam. Both were on the police list of known thieves. Singair Police Station officer-in-charge Mazharul Islam and assistant superintendent of police (Singair Circle) Fahim Asjad visited the scene. The incident has created a stir in the area.

Locals said the gang had been involved in multiple thefts in the area over the past three years. They had been caught and handed over to police several times before.

Residents also said that after being caught, the two dead suspects had named three more accomplices. Police are investigating.

Singair Police Station inspector (investigation) Swapan Kumar Sarkar said: “The bodies of the deceased are currently at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka. Legal procedures will be completed after the autopsy.”
