GHIOR, Manikganj — Vandals uprooted potato plants on 30 decimals of land belonging to a farmer named Sirjan Khalifa in Ghior upazila of Manikganj.

The incident occurred sometime during the night of Thursday, Dec. 18, in South Natuyabari Chak of Singjuri Union. It came to light on the morning of Friday, Dec. 19.

The affected farmer is Sirjan Khalifa.

A visit to the site showed that all 30 decimals of Khalifa’s potato crop had been uprooted, with the plants scattered across the field. The plants had just begun forming tubers. Khalifa broke down in tears upon seeing the condition of his field in the morning.

Sirjan Khalifa said he received a call from his son-in-law in the morning and came to inspect the field. “When I arrived, everything was ruined,” he said. “There may be enmities, but what is the crop’s fault? I borrowed money from an NGO and took loans to cultivate this potato. The vandals have caused me nearly half a lakh taka in losses. I want the administration to bring those responsible for this inhumane act to justice.”

Sharmin Akter, the upazila sub-assistant agriculture officer, said: “I have heard the news. The matter is extremely inhumane and unfortunate. After visiting the site, I will inform higher authorities. I will make every effort to determine whether any government incentive or assistance can be provided to him.”

Ghior Police Station officer-in-charge Mir Mahabub said no complaint had been received. “If a complaint is filed, we will investigate and take action,” he said.
