HARIRAMPUR, Manikganj — A 17-year-old college student named Kazi Hasib has built a mini aircraft modeled on the Russian MiG-29 fighter jet in Harirampur upazila of Manikganj, using money he saved from his daily tiffin allowance. The aircraft is flown by remote control. Like a real fighter jet, it climbs at high speed, performs eye-catching aerobatic maneuvers and darts from one end of the sky to the other. The sound of the engine resembles that of a real Russian warplane, the young inventor said.

The aircraft can climb to about 500 meters and circle within a radius of nearly 3 kilometers under remote control, he said.

Kazi Hasib is the son of Kazi Ilias, a poor farmer from Kachuya village in Chala Union of the upazila. He is a first-semester computer science student in the diploma program at Manikganj National Polytechnic Institute. His feat has created a stir locally, and people from various walks of life are praising him.

Hasib passed his SSC examinations this year from Jhitka Anand Mohan High School in the upazila before enrolling in computer science at Manikganj National Polytechnic Institute. He began researching the project in ninth grade and saw it through to success after three years. His dream came true despite his family’s poverty.

He spent 22,000 taka to build the mini aircraft, using money saved over a long period from his tiffin allowance. The aircraft is 3.5 feet long and 2.5 feet wide. He used materials including Depron sheet and corkscrew bodies, power batteries, a transmitter, a receiver, an electronic speed controller, a servo, a motor, a propeller, balloons, glue and cellophane tape. It was then flown on a trial basis. When the aircraft climbs into the sky, its sound fills the surroundings. It looks like a real fighter jet.

“My dream was to do something different,” Kazi Hasib said. “From ninth grade, the idea of building this aircraft kept going through my head. But we are poor. My parents struggled to pay for my education. So instead of asking my father for money, I saved my tiffin allowance and built this mini aircraft. I had built two earlier, but they did not work properly. Then I built this one, and it flew. If it can be developed further, this autopilot aircraft could be used in war zones.”

Local resident Saimon said: “We are really amazed by his talent. At such a young age, he built this aircraft with such forethought. Without doubt, Hasib is the pride of our area. His father is a poor man. So if the government takes care of Hasib, something good could come of it for the country. I urge the administration to pay attention to him.”

Neighbor Md. Imon Sheikh said: “Our little brother Hasib has built this aircraft, and without doubt it is a matter of pride for our area. We are proud of it. If the government takes care of him, he can do well, because he has talent. We want the government to support Hasib.”

Hasib’s mother said: “Everyone in the area is amazed by my son’s aircraft. We are amazed too. We can’t really afford his expenses. He saved his tiffin money and built this aircraft today, and of course that is a matter of pride. My request is that if you stand by my son, he can do something good. We want your support.”

Hasib’s father, Kazi Ilias, said: “I am a poor man. I make a living from farming. My son has built this aircraft today by spending 22,000 taka saved from his tiffin money. I am proud of him. If wealthy members of society or the government help my son, I believe he will do something good.”

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nahida Akhter said: “I had not heard about this. I am learning about it for the first time from you. I will inquire about him. We will then see if we can do something for him.”
