Mahfuzul Haider Chowdhury Roton, a former general secretary of the Chhatra League, which is now a banned organisation, has died. He had lung cancer and had long been under treatment.
He died at 7am on Saturday at a hospital in Kolkata, India.
Joynal Abedin, a member of the Chattogram city unit of the Jubo League, whose activities are banned, confirmed the death. He said Roton died shortly after 7am and that preparations were being made to bring his body home.
Roton was general secretary of the central committee of the Bangladesh Chhatra League from 2006 to 2011. The president of that committee was Mahmud Hasan Ripon.
After his time in the Chhatra League he was also active in Awami League politics. A politician from Raozan in Chattogram, he collected an Awami League nomination form for the Chattogram-6 (Raozan) seat in the 2018 national election. In 2021 he was named a member of the Awami League’s sub-committee on labour and manpower.
