The mosque is the house of God. Muslims worship there and God is remembered there, so preserving its sanctity is everyone’s duty.
Mobile phones are not altogether forbidden in the mosque. A phone may be used when there is a need and the purpose is lawful. But the etiquette of the mosque must be kept, and no one’s worship may be disturbed in the least.
Using the phone without need is not right. Playing games or amusing oneself is not permissible either, nor is idle worldly talk or watching pictures or videos. Any use that troubles other worshippers is also not allowed. It is essential to keep away from such pointless things.
Before coming to the mosque
If possible it is better to leave the phone at home or at the office. Otherwise switch it off before entering the mosque. If it cannot be switched off, at least put it on silent.
Attention must also be paid to the ringtone and message tone. They must not contain songs or music, or any sound contrary to the Shariah. Then even if the phone rings by mistake there will be no sin of music.
If a call comes in the mosque
If an urgent call comes, go outside the mosque to talk. If that is not possible, go to a quiet spot and speak very softly. Keep the call short and say only what is needed.
It is not right to talk on the phone while sitting among the worshippers. It disturbs others’ prayer and worship and may trouble them. More care is needed when someone is absorbed in worship, and during congregational prayer.
WhatsApp and Messenger
Really necessary messages may be sent, and necessary contact is permissible. But these services may not be used to look at pictures or videos of living beings, to listen to songs or music, or for anything immoral. Exchanging messages for no reason should also be avoided.
Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram
These platforms may not be used in the mosque. It is contrary to the dignity of the mosque.
In short
The basic rule is simple. A phone may be used in the mosque for a lawful purpose when needed. The etiquette of the mosque must be kept and others’ worship must not be disturbed. Use without need, games and watching pictures and videos must be given up entirely, as must any use that disturbs the worship of others.
