Brazil and Argentina have both topped their groups at the 2026 World Cup and are placed on opposite sides of the knockout bracket, setting up the possibility of a semifinal meeting that would be their first at a World Cup in 36 years.

Argentina, under coach Lionel Scaloni, topped Group J after winning their first two matches — 3-0 against Algeria (Messi hat-trick) and 2-0 against Austria — and qualified early for the round of 32. They face the Group H runner-up in the last 32.

Brazil, managed by Carlo Ancelotti, drew their opener 1-1 with Morocco but then beat Haiti and Scotland 3-0 apiece to top Group C on goal difference over Morocco. The Seleção face the Group F runner-up — expected to be Netherlands, Sweden or Japan — in the last 32.

With the two sides placed in different halves of the draw, the earliest they could meet would be the semi-finals, requiring each to win three knockout rounds. In 106 official meetings between the two nations, Argentina lead the head-to-head record 41 wins to Brazil’s 39, with 26 draws.
