TEHRAN — Two missiles have struck a US Navy warship near the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s Fars news agency reported, citing local sources.
The strike took place near Jask Island after the warship ignored warnings from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, the agency said. The vessel was ordered to stop but did not comply, prompting the attack, the report said. There was no immediate detailed confirmation from US authorities.
The incident comes as US President Donald Trump has announced “Project Freedom,” an operation starting Monday to safely escort ships trapped in the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation will deploy about 15,000 troops, more than 100 land- and sea-based aircraft, warships and drones. Rising tensions at the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes, could have significant consequences for international markets and security, analysts said.
