Autocracy must never be allowed to return to the country, and people must stay alert to prevent it, Social Welfare, Women and Children Affairs Minister AZM Zahid Hossain said on Friday.
Speaking as chief guest at the opening of a three-day tree-plantation drive and tree fair organized by the Nawabganj upazila administration in Dinajpur, he said the BNP government was a “humane government” that wanted to stand by every citizen. “The government wants to be beside every person and reach out to them. We only need your cooperation,” he said.
He said distribution of family cards and farmer cards had begun and would reach every village by December. Almost everyone would receive a family card and a farmer card within the next three years, he added.
Everyone must be patient, the minister said, adding that people must remain vigilant so that autocracy can never come back to the country.
Zahid Hossain also inaugurated repair and beautification work at the upazila council auditorium. He distributed sewing machines to beneficiaries from small ethnic communities under a development assistance program for special areas run by the Prime Minister’s Office, awarded scholarships to students, and handed out grant checks to distressed and meritorious students under a Social Welfare Ministry initiative.
Government officials, public representatives, teachers and students from various institutions, dignitaries, and local party leaders and activists attended the event.
