Police have arrested Md Shakil Munshi (25), the main accused in the murder of litchi-orchard owner Azizur in Faridpur’s Salatha upazila.
Salatha police arrested him from the DMP’s Chawkbazar police station area early on Thursday (6 August) with help from RAB-10.
The arrested accused, Shakil Munshi, is the son of Mosharraf Munshi of Charbangrail village in Sonapur union of the upazila.
Confirming the arrest, Salatha police station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Bablur Rahman Khan said that, acting on secret information, Salatha police had arrested Shakil Munshi — the number-one accused in the murder of litchi-orchard owner Azizur — from the DMP’s Chawkbazar area with help from RAB-10. He was sent to a Faridpur court in the afternoon.
According to the case statement, Azizur, a resident of Fulbaria village in Ballabhdi union of the upazila, had built a raised hut to guard his litchi orchard. Shakil Munshi — the son of Mosharraf Munshi of neighbouring Charbangrail village in Sonapur union — and his associates would regularly sit there taking drugs and forcibly pick and eat litchis, the statement said. On the afternoon of 13 May, the orchard owner’s son Akram Molla stopped them from taking drugs and picking litchis. Angered, Shakil and his associates beat Akram, police said. In the ensuing dispute, Shakil and his associates attacked orchard owner Azizur. Locals rescued him and took him to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Over the incident, the victim’s brother Fazlul Haque Molla filed a case at Salatha police station on 15 May, naming 15 people as accused. The charges are yet to be tested in court.
