All four members of the family attacked at a rented house in Raipur municipality, Lakshmipur, on Thursday morning have been confirmed dead, police said. The victims are Shahinur Begum, 38; her eldest daughter Sayma Akhter, 21; and two younger daughters aged 17 and nine. Shahinur Begum, Sayma Akhter and the nine-year-old daughter were declared dead on arrival at the upazila health complex. The 17-year-old, who had been transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, died on the way to Dhaka in the afternoon.
The family had been living in a rented house at the Dakatia riverbank in Raipur municipality for approximately 12 to 14 years. They were originally from Comilla district. Their father, a street vendor, died in an electric shock accident in 2019, and Shahinur Begum had been raising four children alone since then.
The man seized by local residents on suspicion of carrying out the attack also died. He was brought to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital in critical condition after being beaten by the crowd, and died there. Police have launched an investigation. Six to seven police officers were injured by thrown objects while attempting to control the situation during the mob assault on the suspect.
