3 family members buried side by side after Meghna trawler capsize

CUMILLA, Sept. 26 — The recovered victims were Samina, 17, Sajib, 24, and Samin, 5. Rayesha Begum, 55, had been recovered on the day of the accident. Another person, Helal Uddin, remains missing.

When the three bodies were brought to Srimaddi village in Homna upazila of Cumilla around 12 noon Saturday, the area was overcome with grief. After funeral prayers at the local Eidgah field, the three were buried side by side at Charergaon cemetery.

Assistant Commissioner for Land Nusrat Jabin attended on behalf of the upazila administration, along with local dignitaries and residents.

According to local sources, a trawler carrying 14 passengers capsized in the Meghna River on Thursday afternoon while traveling from Homna in Cumilla to attend a relative’s wedding. The trawler overturned in strong currents near the Aman Cement factory in the Sonamoi area of Baidyerbazar union in Sonargaon and sank within moments.

After news of the accident spread, divers from Sonargaon Fire Service and Civil Defence and naval police quickly reached the scene and began rescue operations. At one stage, the sunken trawler was recovered from the riverbed, and rescue work continued to search for the missing.

Homna Police Station Officer-in-Charge Thomas Barua said the recovered bodies were handed over to relatives and buried. One person remains missing, and rescue efforts are continuing to find him, he said.
