Police have detained 519 more people in a drive against teenage gangs in Cumilla.
The drive was carried out simultaneously at 18 police stations in the district from after maghrib prayers until late at night on Thursday, 15 October. That brings the total detained in eight rounds of operations to 3,472, at least 1,000 of whom have been shown as arrested.
Cumilla additional superintendent of police (media) Md Lutfur Rahman confirmed the figures.
He said all units of the district police and the Detective Branch (DB) carried out the drive together as part of regular operations against teen gangs. It covered places in Cumilla city and other police station areas where young troublemakers are active, and senior police officers took part directly.
“Those detained are being screened for involvement in crime and the necessary legal action taken,” the additional superintendent said. “The district police run these drives regularly so that teenagers do not get drawn into crime. But we are also keeping a close watch to make sure no innocent person is harassed. The district police are determined to prevent juvenile crime.”
According to police sources, 2,953 people, including the leaders of various teen gang groups, were detained in the previous seven rounds. With 519 more in the latest drive, the total has reached 3,472.
On 19 September the body of a seventh-grade pupil, the only child of an associate professor in the Bangla department at Cumilla University, was recovered. Members of teen gangs were named in connection with the killing, after which police stepped up their drive against teen gangs.
