Actress Dilara Hanif Purnima has had a career of nearly three decades in Dhallywood. She made her screen debut in the late 1990s, in 1998, with Zakir Hossain Raju’s “E Jibon Tomar Amar,” appearing as a romantic heroine in her very first film. She never had to look back after that, giving audiences one commercially successful film after another. In most of her films, Purnima has been seen in the role of a “sweet girl”; audiences took to her in that familiar image, and filmmakers never thought of casting her in a different kind of role.

Now, after 28 years in front of the camera, the actress has expressed a wish to play a “villain” on screen. July 11 was Purnima’s birthday, and she spoke of this wish while appearing on a special programme on a television channel. She said that although she had played roles of many kinds over her long career, she had never had the chance to play a villainous character, and that in future she wanted to play a formidable role that would leave a deep impression on audiences and give her a chance to be rediscovered as an actress.

“I very much want to play a villain-type role,” Purnima said. “I want to portray a character on screen that people will feel intense hatred for.” She believes filmmakers never considered her for negative roles because of the softness of her face. “I have not played a villain until now. Perhaps no one thought of me that way. Everyone thinks a negative role would not suit my face. Audiences are used to seeing me in a romantic and neat look. But it would be very good if something the opposite happened this time,” she said. Purnima has been irregular in acting for several years; she was last seen in Chhatku Ahmed’s film “Ahare Jibon,” released at Eid in 2024.
