Jorge Messi, the father of Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi, has died. The Spanish outlet Goal.com confirmed the news citing several Argentine media outlets.

Argentine media Infobae and the Rosario3 network claimed that Jorge Messi died at the age of 68. He had been suffering from various physical ailments for some time.

After scoring for Argentina against Algeria at the World Cup last June, Messi had become emotional. Asked after the match about his tears, he had said it had nothing to do with football and that he was going through some difficult days.

Afterwards, various reports spread about the health of Messi’s father. At the time, the Messi family said in a statement that Jorge Messi was suffering from health problems and was under doctors’ observation. It also appealed for rumours and speculation about his personal matters not to be spread.

The family had also requested that the privacy and personal space of Jorge Messi and his relatives be respected. This time, however, the Messi family has not yet confirmed the news of Jorge Messi’s death.

From childhood, Jorge Messi played an important role in his son’s football career. He also played a key part in paving the way for Lionel Messi’s move to Barcelona in 2000, at just 13 years of age. Jorge Messi later began working as an agent for footballers.
