France, Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland have announced they are deploying rescue teams, search dogs and specialist equipment to Venezuela to support search-and-rescue operations following the devastating earthquake, Al Jazeera reported.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that an 85-person specialist search-and-rescue team would be sent to Venezuela immediately. He said he had spoken with Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez to express solidarity with the Venezuelan people and said France and its partners were ready to provide all necessary assistance.
Spain’s Ministry of Defence said a 54-person rescue unit from the army’s emergency response corps was ready for deployment. The team includes specially trained search dogs as well as specialist cameras, geophones and other modern equipment used in rescue operations.
The Netherlands announced it was dispatching a rescue team and allocating approximately 2 million euros for the deployment of rescue personnel, search dogs and necessary equipment.
Switzerland said an 80-person rescue team, eight search dogs and 18 tonnes of rescue equipment would be sent to Venezuela as quickly as possible under its Swiss Rescue Chain programme.
Television footage broadcast on Thursday showed rescue workers using heavy electric machinery to remove rubble from collapsed buildings in an effort to free trapped survivors. In the capital Caracas, residents left their homes in panic following the quake.
