KOLKATA — Twenty-five Muslim candidates won seats in the West Bengal assembly election, with the Trinamool Congress accounting for most of the victories, results showed. The wins were concentrated in Kolkata, Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas, Malda and parts of southern West Bengal. The Indian Secular Front (ISF), Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) also picked up seats.
In Kolkata’s Kasba constituency, outgoing legislator and former state minister Javed Khan of Trinamool retained his seat with a margin of 20,974 votes. Trinamool’s Firhad Hakim won another key Kolkata seat by 56,490 votes, while Abdul Khaleq Molla of Trinamool won the Metiabruz seat by a margin of 87,879 votes.
Trinamool dominated Muslim-majority constituencies in Murshidabad district. The party’s winners included Babar Ali in Jalangi, Niyamat Sheikh in Hariharpara, Mohammad Noor Alam in Shamsherganj, Mustafizur Rahman in Bharatpur and Bayron Biswas in Sagardighi. In the same district, AIUDF candidate Humayun Kabir won the Reginagar and Nowda seats.
In North 24 Parganas, Trinamool’s Anisur Rahman Bidesh won the Deganga constituency. Abdul Matin won Haroa and Tausif Rahman won Basirhat Uttar for Trinamool. Burhanul Mukaddim Liton won the Basirhat seat.
In South 24 Parganas, ISF’s Nawsad Siddiqui drew attention with his win from Bhangar. Trinamool’s Baharul Islam won Canning East and Shamim Ahmed won Magrahat West.
Sabina Yasmin of Trinamool won the Sujapur seat in Malda, while Kajal Sheikh of Trinamool won the Hansan seat in Birbhum.
Among opposition parties, Congress candidate Mahatab Sheikh won Farakka and Zulfikar Ali won Raninagar in Murshidabad, while CPM’s Mostafizur Rahman Rana won Domkal. Other Trinamool winners included Rayat Hossain Sarkar in Bhagabangola, Dr. Abdul Aziz in Lalgola, Imani Biswas in Suti, Akhruzzaman, and Nazrul Islam in Mothabari.
While Trinamool maintained a strong presence in Muslim-majority and minority-influenced constituencies, ISF, Congress, CPM and AIUDF also held visible ground in several key seats, the results showed.
