An intense heatwave has begun across Europe this summer. Because of it, nearly 2,000 people died in Belgium in just 15 days from late June to early July, the Belgian government health institute Sciensano has confirmed. According to Sciensano, the deaths occurred over the 15 days from 18 June to 3 July. The most deaths from the extreme heat were in Belgium’s southern province of Wallonia, followed by the capital, Brussels, and the northern province of Flanders.

Sciensano said it has kept records of heatwave-related deaths in the country since 2000. According to its 26 years of records, this is the first time so many people have died in Belgium from heatstroke and various physical complications caused by a heatwave. Belgium’s previous highest summer-heatwave death toll was in 2020, when 1,557 people died.
