An allegation has been made in Tarash, Sirajganj, that the only path used for movement was fenced off, shutting in 11 people including women and children from two families, following a village dispute over the building of a wall at an Eidgah ground. The allegation was made against a neighbour in the western part of Manoharpur village in Baruhas union of the upazila.

The fence was put up in the western part of Manoharpur village in Baruhas union of the upazila at about 8am on Wednesday (29 July).

According to local sources, villagers split into two camps over the construction of a boundary wall at the Eidgah ground in Manoharpur village. Over the matter, the neighbour Md Jamshed Ali Molla and members of his family took a position against the view of the man accused. Arising from that, the man accused went with his people on Wednesday morning and completely closed off the only path used by Jamshed Ali’s family for movement, using tree branches and a net fence.

Because of the fence across the path, members of the two affected families have been unable to leave their homes since Wednesday morning. As a result students could not go to school and no one has been able to go out for essential household shopping.

The head of one of the affected families, Md Jamshed Ali Molla, said: “We are also the owners of part of the path that has been fenced, and we have been using this path for many years. But we have been shut in because the path has been forcibly closed. Because those accused are influential, we cannot even go to the police station out of fear to lodge a complaint. At present all of us in the family are living in a state of insecurity.”

Denying the allegation, the man accused said the land is his own property. He said he had put up a fence on one side because Jamshed Ali’s use of the path was damaging his cropland. He claimed there is an alternative path on the other side for movement.

The officer in charge of Tarash police station, Md Habibur Rahman, said no written complaint had yet been received over the incident. If a written complaint is received, he said, legal steps will be taken quickly subject to an investigation.

BD Global Times is not naming the man accused: no complaint has been filed and the allegation has not been tested.
