A mother and her son, both passengers of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, were killed when a bus struck the vehicle in Sirajganj’s Ullapara upazila. At least three others were seriously injured in the incident.

The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Thursday (July 9) on the Dhaka-Bogura highway in the upazila’s Hatikumrul area.

The deceased were identified as Nila Begum, 25, wife of Biplob Hossain of Nurnagar village in Kamarkhanda upazila, Sirajganj, and her three-year-old son.

According to highway police and local sources, Nila Begum was traveling with her child and other family members from Salanga toward Hatikumrul by CNG-run auto-rickshaw in the afternoon. As the vehicle approached the Hatikumrul roundabout area on the highway, a speeding bus heading from Bogura to Dhaka struck it. The auto-rickshaw was crushed, and the mother and her three-year-old son died on the spot. At least three other passengers in the vehicle were seriously injured.

Confirming the incident, Hatikumrul Highway Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Ismail Hossain said highway police reached the scene quickly after receiving news of the accident and, with local assistance, rescued the injured and sent them to a local hospital. The bus fled the scene immediately after the collision.

He also said the bodies of the deceased have been recovered and kept at the police station. Multiple highway police teams are working to identify the bus involved and detain the driver and helper. Preparations are under way to file a case at the police station over the incident.
