Five Bangladeshi expatriate workers have been killed in a horrific road accident in the Middle Eastern country of Qatar. The homes of all the deceased are in Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet district. The tragic accident occurred on a Qatari motorway early on Sunday, June 21, local time.
The Bangladeshis killed in the accident were Jasim Uddin, Jibal Uddin, Mostak Ahmad, Zubayer Ahmad and Kader Ahmad, all from Gachhbari village in Kanaighat upazila.
According to the Bangladesh Embassy in Qatar and family sources, the expatriates were on their way to work early on Sunday as usual. On the way, the vehicle carrying them suddenly lost control, swerved off the side of the motorway and crashed, killing them on the spot. It is not yet clear exactly why the vehicle lost control; local traffic police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, news of the sudden deaths of these expatriate workers — who had travelled to the desert country in search of a livelihood — has plunged their home villages into mourning. The air in Kanaighat has grown heavy with the wailing of relatives. The Bangladesh Embassy has formally conveyed the sad news to the bereaved families at home.
On receiving news of the accident, officials of the Bangladesh Embassy in Qatar rushed to the scene and to the morgue of a local hospital. They took stock of the overall situation and initiated the necessary legal assistance.
Embassy authorities said that, after completing the legal process and official paperwork for the deceased Bangladeshis, the process of sending the bodies home to their families in the shortest possible time had begun. Constant contact was being maintained with the Qatari administration on the matter. Ahmed Malek, general secretary of the ‘Jalalabad Association Qatar,’ said they were coordinating round the clock with the Bangladesh Embassy in Qatar. Arrangements were being made to hand over the bodies of the five expatriates to their relatives as quickly as possible after completing the necessary legal procedures.
