BARGUNA — Excavation of two canals in Amtali upazila of Barguna has begun under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s canal excavation program. Barguna-1 MP Maulana Mahmudul Hossain Oli Ullah inaugurated the work on Saturday, May 2.
Those present included Amtali Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Muhammad Jafar Arif Chowdhury; Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Sahadat Hasnain Parvez; project implementation officer Md. Masum; Kukua Union Parishad Chairman Md. Borhan Uddin Masum Talukdar; former upazila BNP president Md. Jalal Uddin Fakir; member secretary Tuhin Mridha; Islami Andolan Bangladesh Amtali branch president Maulana Omar Faruk Jehadi; and Pourashava BNP convener Md. Kabir Fakir.
Oli Ullah said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had taken up the canal excavation project to create jobs for the ultra-poor. “Once this project is implemented, thousands of farmers in two unions will benefit. The prime minister is working for the development of marginalized communities,” he said.
The Department of Disaster Management on April 4 allocated 7.7 million taka for three kilometers of excavation of the West Kewabunia canal in Kukua union and 5.1 million taka for two kilometers of excavation of the Pashurbunia canal in Haldia union.
A total of 397 ultra-poor beneficiaries will work on the canal excavation. The respective union development implementation committees will support the work.
