Parents kill drug-addicted son in Bakerganj, surrender at police station

BARISHAL — A 20-year-old man identified as Hasan Gazi was beaten to death by his parents in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal, and the couple surrendered at the local police station afterward. The incident took place Tuesday afternoon in the Bharpasha area of Ward No. 6 of Bakerganj municipality.

Hasan was the only son of Jaffar Gazi, 48, and Nazma Begum, 40, of Bharpasha. The couple had two daughters and one son. The daughters were married. Hasan had been addicted to drugs for some time and often beat his parents to get money for his habit.

Neighbors said Hasan began breaking household items Tuesday afternoon demanding 5,000 taka. When his father, Jaffar Gazi, intervened, the son began beating him. His mother, Nazma, then tried to protect her husband and was also assaulted. The parents struck their son with a pipe, killing him on the spot. The couple then went to the police station and surrendered.

Bakerganj police station’s officer in charge, Abul Kalam Azad, said Jaffar Gazi and his wife Nazma Begum arrived at the station around 4 p.m. Tuesday and reported that they had beaten their son to death. Hasan’s body was recovered Tuesday evening and sent to the morgue at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for an autopsy.
