PM orders quick steps to curb air and noise pollution

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the authorities concerned to take quick and effective steps to control air and noise pollution. He also stressed strong measures to curb brick-kiln pollution, remove unfit and polluting vehicles from the capital, and control excessive horn use. He gave the directives while chairing a high-level meeting on environmental pollution at the prime minister’s office in Tejgaon in the capital on Saturday (18 July).

The meeting held detailed discussions on the current state of air and noise pollution and on short, medium and long-term initiatives to control it, deciding to take quick, effective steps to reduce brick-kiln air pollution, with the prime minister stressing the use of environmentally friendly alternative technology to produce bricks. Effective measures to control noise pollution from excessive horn use in the capital were also discussed, with the prime minister directing law-enforcement agencies to act more strictly, and the meeting discussing the potential and effectiveness of using AI technology to control horns, modelled on the AI cameras used in traffic management. The prime minister stressed effective steps to quickly remove unfit, expired and polluting buses, trucks and other vehicles from the capital’s roads, and ordered automatic traffic-light systems introduced quickly at at least 50 more important points in Dhaka to reduce congestion and modernise traffic management.

Present were Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam, State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, the prime minister’s special assistant for environment, forests and climate change Dr Saimum Parvez, Dhaka South City Corporation administrator Md Abdus Salam, Dhaka North City Corporation administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan, Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, additional police commissioner (traffic) Md Anisur Rahman, and senior officials of various ministries and agencies.
