Argentina’s dramatic last-minute win over Egypt in the World Cup round of 16 left the defending champions briefly worried about Cristian Romero. But with the Switzerland match ahead, that concern did not last long. The defending champions are in high spirits.

Argentina trailed 2-0 until the 78th minute before scoring three goals in a 13-minute burst to win 3-2. Romero scored the first of Argentina’s three goals. Despite playing a crucial role in the comeback, he became a source of concern for the team after feeling discomfort in his left calf late in the match.

Initial examination showed it was not an injury — just muscle tightness that caused the discomfort, according to a source within the Argentina squad cited by TyC Sports. The defender was seen training with the team ahead of the match against Switzerland and showed no signs of discomfort during the session.

Argentina will face Switzerland in the quarterfinal on July 12 at 7 a.m. Bangladesh time. The report also said Romero is likely to start at Kansas City Stadium, with head coach Lionel Scaloni not looking to make major changes from the starting lineup that faced Egypt.

Players spent much of Wednesday’s training session on recovery. Those who played extended minutes against Egypt took part in gym work and other recovery sessions, while those who did not start or played briefly trained normally on the pitch. The first 15 minutes of training were open to the media.

No clear picture has yet emerged of Argentina’s likely starting lineup against Switzerland. TyC Sports said the coaching staff would finalize the lineup after Friday’s training session, with Scaloni set to discuss the team’s preparations at a press conference following the final session.
