President Md. Sahabuddin has received special permission from Bangladesh Bank, exceeding the limit set for depositors of five merged banks, to withdraw funds. Citing medical needs, the central bank approved withdrawal of Tk 2 million from his account at Global Islami Bank.

According to Bangladesh Bank and related sources, the president applied to the central bank through Global Islami Bank’s Gulshan corporate branch in late May. In the application, he sought permission to withdraw Tk 3 million from his account for medical and family expenses. On June 16, Bangladesh Bank approved withdrawal of Tk 2 million.

Bangladesh Bank has set withdrawal limits for depositors of the five banks merged under the bank resolution scheme. Under the scheme, a depositor can generally withdraw a maximum of Tk 200,000. Those with deposits exceeding that amount can withdraw up to Tk 100,000 every three months. However, in cases of serious illness, special consideration allows withdrawals of up to Tk 1 million per month. Many depositors, however, complain they are not receiving this special facility despite genuine need.

Confirming the matter, Bangladesh Bank executive director and spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan told Amar Desh that President Md. Sahabuddin had applied through Global Islami Bank seeking permission to withdraw funds for medical treatment. He said that while the repayment of deposits at the five banks is being handled under the bank resolution scheme, the president was granted permission to withdraw Tk 2 million in consideration of his position and status.

Arif Hossain Khan said special arrangements exist for depositors suffering from serious illnesses, and that special permission has previously been granted to several depositors in exceptional circumstances.
