DHAKA — Islami Bank had called a meeting of its board of directors to mark the joining of its new chairman. The meeting did not take place, however, in the face of protests by customers. The bank’s acting managing director had obtained permission from the central bank to hold the meeting online, but that too could not be held because of pressure from customers. Allegations have surfaced that law enforcers pressed the managing director to hold the meeting online.

During a visit to the managing director’s office on Monday afternoon, some police officers were seen telling the managing director to hold the meeting online. Customers, in protest, continued to demonstrate in front of the managing director’s room. As of now, the bank has not been able to hold the meeting.

Leaders of the customers’ forum there told reporters that police and Detective Branch (DB) officers were pressuring the managing director to hold the meeting online. The bank was taken over in the same way in 2017, they said, vowing to resist the attempt.

Islami Bank’s acting managing director, Altaf Hussain, said: “Out of respect for the customers’ demand, I refrained from holding the board meeting online even after obtaining the central bank’s approval.”
