The government is considering giving students who fail the SSC and equivalent examinations a chance to sit them again within three to six months, without making them wait a year. Special initiatives will also be taken for these students’ skills development, employment and careers.
Mahdi Amin, the prime minister’s adviser on education and on primary and mass education, said this on Saturday at the Challenged Students Conference 2026, organised jointly by the Campaign for Popular Education and Plan International Bangladesh at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.
He said there was a plan to arrange for students who fail to be re-examined within three to six months from next year. The government would look favourably in particular on creating a chance to sit quickly the subjects in which students had failed.
Mahdi Amin said a large number of students had not achieved the results they expected in this year’s SSC and equivalent examinations, and the government could not avoid responsibility for their future. The prime minister had instructed that a list be made of students who failed or did not get the results they hoped for, and that opportunities be created for them to build careers in line with their abilities and interests.
He said training at technical training centres and technical and vocational education might be arranged for these students. For those with a good idea for a business, the creation of an opportunity for initial funding would also be considered.
Stressing the creation of job opportunities abroad, the adviser said there were plans to arrange the teaching of Japanese, Korean, Chinese or the languages of various European countries. It is hoped that many students will be able to go straight into employment after three to six months of language study and technical training.
He said that holding an SSC, HSC or honours certificate alone does not guarantee employment. Skills and knowledge of languages can widen students’ chances of work, so it is essential to create opportunities to acquire practical skills alongside formal education.
Addressing the students, Mahdi Amin said a good SSC result does not ensure success in life, and equally no one becomes a failure because of a bad result. Some do well in sport, some in culture, some in scientific innovation and some in business. No one’s other talents and creativity should be overlooked because they failed in one subject.
He also spoke about the system for re-scrutiny of examination scripts. Earlier, he said, re-scrutiny mainly checked whether the marks had been added up correctly. An initiative has now been taken for a full evaluation of the answer scripts.
