BARGUNA — Candidates from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Khelafat Majlis withdrew their nominations from two Barguna constituencies on Tuesday, in line with a 10-party electoral alliance arrangement, the candidates said.
They submitted their withdrawal applications to Returning Officer Taslima Akhter on Jan. 20, the final day for withdrawal, according to Shajal Chandra Sheel, additional district magistrate and spokesperson for the returning officer.
Those who withdrew were Md. Mohibullah, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami nominee from Barguna-1, which covers Barguna Sadar, Amtali and Taltali, and Md. Rafiqul Islam, the Khelafat Majlis nominee from Barguna-2, which covers Pathorghata, Bamna and Betagi.
Mohibullah of Barguna-1 said the 10-party alliance had cleared the way for Khelafat Majlis candidate Jahangir Hossain to contest the seat. “For this reason the party asked me to withdraw,” he said. “In the greater national interest, in line with Jamaat-e-Islami’s organizational decision to build an Insaf-compliant Bangladesh, I have withdrawn my nomination in support of the 10-party candidate.”
Rafiqul Islam of Barguna-2 said the alliance had allocated Barguna-1 to Khelafat Majlis and Barguna-2 to Jamaat-e-Islami. “On the central decision, having joined the 10-party alliance I withdrew my nomination from the Barguna-2 seat,” he said.
Sheel, the additional magistrate, said 15 candidates had originally filed for the two seats. After the withdrawals, four candidates remain in Barguna-1 and nine in Barguna-2, he said.
