PIRGANJ, Thakurgaon — Workers raised the national flag and the Awami League’s party flag at the party’s office in this upazila, where the party’s activities have been banned. Chhatra Dal staged a protest march in response, and tension spread through the area.

Awami League activists raised the national flag and the party flag at the upazila party office on the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 15.

A video of the flag-raising spread on social media, drawing debate across the political spectrum.

After the video went viral, activists of the Chhatra Dal and the Swechchhasebak Dal staged a protest march that evening. The march circled the main road of the municipal town and ended in front of the upazila Awami League office. Some agitated activists vandalized a table that had been set up in front of the office.
