RANISANKAIL, Bangladesh — At least four people were injured when supporters of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami clashed in Thakurgaon’s Ranisankail upazila over the president’s address at the first session of parliament, police said.
The clash broke out Friday night in Chandanchahat village of Nekmarad union, police said.
According to local sources, several Jubo Dal leaders were discussing Jamaat lawmakers’ walkout from the parliament’s first session in protest of the president’s speech when Mohammad Akhtar Hossain, president of the Nekmarad union ward-1 unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, arrived and got into an argument with them. The exchange escalated as supporters of both parties gathered at the scene and the dispute turned into a clash. BNP activists Mohammad Ariful, Mohammad Faruq and Mohammad Rubel and Jamaat leader Mohammad Akhtar Hossain were injured.
The injured were taken to the Ranisankail Upazila Health Complex. Police restored order at the scene after tensions spread through the area. The injured did not give statements.
Ranisankail police station Officer-in-Charge Amanullah Al Bari confirmed the incident and said the situation was under control. He said both the BNP and Jamaat have filed first information reports, which are being processed, and no one has been detained so far.
