THAKURGAON — Former students gave a retiring teacher an elaborate sendoff on Valentine’s Day, escorting him home in a flower-decked open-roof microbus followed by a striking convoy of more than 100 motorcycles. The event was held Saturday from morning to noon at Kashua Khademganj Government Primary School in Barpalashbari union of Baliadangi upazila in Thakurgaon.
About 500 former students gathered to give the unusual farewell to Yusuf Ali, the school’s recently retired head teacher.
A farewell reception and prayer service were held on the school grounds at midday, chaired by Joynal Abedin, a retired head teacher of the school. Speakers included Upazila Education Officer Rabiul Islam; Sultan Ali Manik, assistant teacher at Kadihat High School; Anwar Hossain, head teacher of Baliahat Government Primary School; and acting head teacher Jillur Rahman, along with teachers from other nearby government primary schools.
Yusuf Ali became emotional as he spoke. “I never even dreamed I would get such a loving farewell at the end of my life,” he said. “I tried to give my best to my students.”
