THAKURGAON — Mourning has spread across this district following the death of Ramesh Chandra Sen, a former member of parliament for Thakurgaon-1 and a former minister of water resources.
On the evening of Saturday, Feb. 7, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate and former Chhatra Shibir central president Md. Delwar Hossain visited Sen’s village home in Ruhiya to pay his last respects.
An emotional scene unfolded there. When Hossain went to console Sen’s widow, Anjali Rani Sen, she broke down in tears.
“You have come, my son,” Anjali Rani Sen said in a tearful voice as she addressed Hossain. “I have no one else. He did not even live until the election.”
She reminisced about conversations with other family members and addressed Hossain as her own son. The Jamaat candidate gently offered her water and tried to calm her.
Speaking to reporters, Hossain said Thakurgaon had lost a senior and experienced political figure with Sen’s death. “In a long political career, he tried to work for the people,” he said. “I considered it a moral duty to stand by the grieving family today. I pray for peace for his departed soul.”
Prison and family sources said Sen fell ill on Saturday morning while held at the Dinajpur district jail. After finishing breakfast and preparing to bathe, he suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed. Jail authorities rushed him to the emergency department of Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Sen was born on April 30, 1940, in Koshalgaon village of Thakurgaon. A five-time elected MP, he had served as a presidium member of the Awami League. He was arrested at his home on Aug. 16, 2024, after the fall of the Awami League government on Aug. 5. He had since been held in custody facing multiple cases, including for murder.
Political parties and social organizations expressed deep grief and condolences over his death.
