LAKSHMIPUR — A hotel owner has been fined 50,000 taka (about $410) for using stockpiled beef fat to cook fish, chicken and other curries, officials said.
Consumer rights and safe food authorities also confirmed allegations that the hotel was selling rotten and stale food.
The raid on Bismillah Hotel was carried out Wednesday afternoon. Separately, a pharmacy named Ekata Pharmacy was fined 1,000 taka for keeping expired medicines.
District Safe Food Officer Sumudhu Chakraborty and Nur Hossain, assistant director of the district consumer rights office, took part in the operation.
Consumer rights and safe food authorities said Bismillah Hotel, located in front of the hospital, had been using oil made from stockpiled beef fat to cook fish, chicken and various curries. Expired bread, stale fish and meat were also seized from the hotel’s freezer. The hotel owner was fined 50,000 taka, and the rotten and stale food and other items were confiscated and destroyed.
Chakraborty said patients and their relatives at the hospital eat at the hotel. “The hotel’s environment was filthy, stale food was being stored in the freezer, and cooking was done with oil made from congealed beef fat,” he said. Expired medicines were also found at the pharmacy. Both shopkeepers were fined and warned about future violations.
