LAKSHMIPUR — Police have arrested a young man accused of manufacturing firearms under cover of his workshop business, authorities said.
The suspect, Nur Uddin Jiku, was detained Tuesday evening, Dec. 9, in a remote area of Chandraghona police station’s jurisdiction in Rangamati by Lakshmipur District Detective Branch officers.
Jiku is the son of Abdul Gofran of Jagadishpur village in Alaiyarpur Union of Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila, and the owner of Noha Auto Traders and Engineering Workshop in Chandraganj West Bazar in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila.
District police said the arrest was made under the direction of Additional Superintendent of Police Raihan Kazemi and led by Shahadat Hossain Tito, officer in charge of the District Detective Branch. Jiku was a fugitive in an arms case filed at Chandraganj police station, police said.
On Dec. 1, police recovered a locally made weapon and a large quantity of arms-making equipment from his workshop. He had been manufacturing weapons there under cover of the workshop, police said. A case was filed against him under the Arms Act at Chandraganj police station that day, but he had fled and could not be arrested at the time.
Six days later, on the morning of Dec. 7, acting on intelligence, officers recovered five single-barrel locally made rifles and one shotgun from the graveyard at Jiku’s family home in Jagadishpur village in Noakhali. The weapons were made at his workshop and were new, police said.
Hossain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi, additional superintendent of police for administration and finance, said Jiku had been making firearms under the guise of his workshop. Weapons and arms-making equipment were recovered from his shop and from the graveyard at his home, he said. A case has been filed against him under the Arms Act, and officers raided Rangamati to arrest him in connection with that case.
