Delhi police have filed a case against Rahul Gandhi, leader of India’s main opposition Congress party, and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Other members of parliament have also been named in the case.

The first information report accuses them of entering the Akashvani Bhavan compound without permission on Tuesday during opposition protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Hindustan Times reports.

An officer aware of the matter said the complaint states that the leaders entered the office compound without permission after police stopped the opposition parties’ march towards the Election Commission of India.

A senior police officer said: “An FIR has been registered under the relevant sections. Further investigation is under way.”

It came a day after at least 300 opposition MPs marched from Parliament House towards the Election Commission’s headquarters demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Police stopped the march outside the headquarters and detained more than 250 protesters.

After the standoff, about 20 opposition leaders including Rahul and Priyanka went to the Akashvani Bhavan compound beside Nirvachan Sadan and protested there until 8pm.

The leaders were then detained. A large number of police put Rahul Gandhi on a bus. Congress alleges that Rahul Gandhi, party general secretary KC Venugopal and others were manhandled and forced on to the bus.

The detained leaders were taken to Kingsway Camp and released at about 10:15pm.

The FIR is based on the allegation of unauthorised entry into the Akashvani Bhavan compound. Details of the sections applied and of who is named were not immediately available.

A police officer aware of the matter said some Congress workers later reached the New Police Lines area and are accused of trying to scale the compound wall there.

Tuesday’s protest was part of the opposition parties’ campaign demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over allegations of election rigging.

The BJP has rejected the allegations and criticised the protests.
