Md Rajib Sheikh has been accused of lifting sand with a dredger from a government canal east of the fish landing at Siddheshwari Bazar in Tongibari upazila, Munshiganj, and filling cropland with it using bulkheads.

Local people allege that for a long time dredger pipes have been laid from the government canal at Siddheshwari Bazar and sand dumped on two-crop land about a kilometre away in the Rautbhog and Ganaisar areas. They also allege that since the start of the monsoon the pipes have been run across the road to fill this land. Recently several plots have been filled, including about 69 decimals of cropland belonging to Saijuddin Sheikh beside the road from Siddheshwari Bazar to Rautbhog and Ganaisar, they said. Sand is also alleged to have been dumped in the same way on the cropland of Amir Ali Mistri at Dakshinpara in Rautbhog village.

Residents say two to three bulkhead loads of sand are brought and dumped on the land every day, destroying farmland and threatening the area’s environment and farm output.

It is alleged that Rajib Sheikh, who runs the dredger, is using the names of BNP leaders and carrying on filling cropland in defiance of a ban by the administration.

An attempt was made to reach Rajib Sheikh by mobile phone, but he did not answer.
