Munshiganj district police have found three schoolgirls who went missing from Sreenagar upazila and brought them back from Cox’s Bazar, Superintendent of Police Md Menhajul Alam told a press conference at 3pm on Sunday.

The three, two eighth-grade students at a high school in Bhagyakul and a seventh-grade student at a madrasa, disappeared on 14 October after leaving home saying they were going to school. Police began investigating after their families filed a general diary at Sreenagar police station.

Police located them with the help of technology, brought them back from Cox’s Bazar and handed them over to their families on Sunday.

The girls told police they had decided to leave home because of family strife, quarrels between their parents, mental strain, neglect and other unwanted circumstances. When they left, they took cash their mothers had saved for medical treatment, along with gold jewellery.

Police told the press conference that the girls had been in contact with a 16-year-old boy from the Rangamati area. They had met him through TikTok and the game Free Fire.

Following that lead, police raided a hotel in Cox’s Bazar, the Grand Taj Hotel and Resort, and found the three girls there at about 4:30am on 17 October. The girls had earlier rented a room at the hotel for three days for Tk 20,000 with the help of an auto-rickshaw driver, according to police. The boy who was with them was also questioned.

The superintendent urged parents to stay alert to students being led astray through the misuse of social media and online games.
