The government has decided to import one cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Singapore to keep the country’s gas supply normal and to meet rising energy demand. About 950 crore taka will be spent on this gas, bought by the international quotation collection method.
The proposal to buy the LNG was approved at a meeting of the cabinet committee on government purchases, chaired by the finance minister, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, at the Secretariat on Thursday.
According to the proposal of the energy and mineral resources division, the 42nd cargo of LNG will be bought by the international quotation collection method, following clause (a) of sub-rule (3) of rule 105 of the Public Procurement Rules, 2025, for delivery on 15 to 16 August.
To that end the Singapore-based company Vitol Asia Private Limited has been selected as the lowest bidder. LNG will be bought from the company at a rate of 22.35 US dollars per MMBtu.
According to the purchase proposal, the government’s total expenditure on importing one cargo of gas will be 949 crore 43 lakh 12 thousand 184 taka. Advance income tax is also included in this amount.
The proposal was given final approval at the meeting following the recommendation of the cabinet committee on government purchases. The decision was taken in order to keep the country’s existing gas supply situation normal and to continue supply through imports to meet energy demand in industry, electricity and other sectors.
