Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the current Middle East situation and the Hormuz Strait issue.

In a post on social media platform X, Modi said he welcomed the progress made in ongoing talks between Iran and the United States. He also reaffirmed the importance of ensuring unimpeded maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz for India and the entire world.

India is heavily dependent on fuel imports from the Gulf region. Before the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28, approximately 45 percent of India’s total crude oil imports, half of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, and roughly 90 percent of its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports transited through the Strait of Hormuz.

India has historically maintained close ties with Iran. However, under Prime Minister Modi, New Delhi has also significantly strengthened its relationship with Israel.

India has played a comparatively quiet diplomatic role in recent conflict-resolution efforts. By contrast, India’s rival Pakistan has been at the forefront of ceasefire and de-escalation negotiations.
