The car carrying the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) chief organiser for the northern region, Sarjis Alam, was attacked in Golapganj, Sylhet. The rear window of the car was broken. Sarjis blamed Chhatra Dal for the attack.

The incident took place at about a quarter to three on Thursday afternoon, as he was leaving after an event at the Golapganj municipality auditorium. A meeting and exchange of views between the NCP and members of the families of those killed in the July mass uprising had been held at the auditorium.

A central executive member of the NCP’s labour organisation, Jatiya Sramik Shakti, Shibbir Ahmad, said the cars of the NCP members of parliament Mahmuda Mitu and Atikur Rahman Mojahid were also attacked. In addition, a car carrying members of seven families of those killed was attacked.

According to several local NCP leaders, the convoy carrying Sarjis Alam was leaving the auditorium area after the meeting when several people threw bottles and stones at his car. The car was struck. Brief tension arose at the scene. Police were present in front of Sarjis Alam’s car and the municipality at the time.

According to eyewitnesses, small soft-drink bottles were thrown at the car. The rear glass of the car carrying Sarjis Alam was broken. Slogans of “fake, fake” were chanted at the time.

It could not immediately be confirmed whether anyone was injured in the incident. No formal statement from police on the bottle-throwing was available.

The car carrying Sarjis Alam was seen leaving for Sylhet under police escort from the scene.

Later, back at the Sylhet Circuit House, Sarjis Alam said Chhatra Dal “terrorists” had carried out the attack. He also said there had been an attack with cleavers and machetes in the Panchmile area on the way back to Sylhet.

Denying the allegation, the general secretary of the Sylhet district Chhatra Dal, Delwar Hossain, said that if a single one of their leaders or workers had been involved, let them be shown. Instructions had been given not to obstruct even if anything was said about their leaders and workers, he said. The visitors had gone to meet members of the families of those killed but had not met any of the injured, and he had heard that the trouble started from there.

Sarjis Alam’s accusation is attributed to him; the district Chhatra Dal has denied it. No formal police account of the incident was available.
