Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir’s Sylhet Agricultural University unit welcomed new students with Quran recitation, Islamic songs, flowers and gifts.

The colourful “Freshers’ Reception and Career Guideline” event was held at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium beside TB Gate in Sylhet city at about 9:30am on Wednesday (August 12).

Sylhet Agricultural University unit president Rakib Hasan Shanto chaired the event, moderated by unit secretary Tanvir Ahmed Konok. S M Farhad, DUCSU general secretary and the organisation’s central publicity secretary, spoke as chief guest.

Farhad said: “The opportunity to study at university is a great blessing from Allah, so it must be used properly while remembering accountability in the hereafter as well as this world. In the age of artificial intelligence, surface-level work is not enough; students must build the habit of deep concentration through ‘deep work’. They should avoid unnecessary social-media use and multitasking and focus on clear goals.”

He added: “Money and wealth do not guarantee true happiness. True success comes from controlling desires, achieving peace of mind and working for society’s welfare.”

Speaking about the campus environment, he strongly opposed forced political activity, ragging and a culture of fear. “A university is not the hereditary property of any political party; it belongs to ordinary students. Student organisations’ main duties should be improving students’ skills, mentoring them and ensuring their rights. We must ensure a safe and free campus where no student faces discrimination for taking part in politics or choosing not to.”

He answered questions from new students after his speech.

Professor Dr Sultan Ahmed Tipu, a noted educator, gave guidance on academic and career issues. Tanzin Hossain Jewel, the organisation’s central information and human-rights secretary, spoke on character building and ethics.

Sylhet metropolitan Chhatra Shibir president Shahidul Islam Saju and former unit president and metropolitan office secretary Kalim Uddin, among other former leaders, also spoke as special guests.

Unit president Rakib Hasan Shanto ended the event with a closing speech, wishing the new students success and thanking everyone present.
