The government is considering transforming the city corporations into a “city government” to make Dhaka more liveable, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said.

“To make the city corporations more effective in urban cleanliness and waste management, the government is thinking of transforming them into a city government,” he said.

He made the remarks on Wednesday at a seminar titled “Managing the City’s Waste Is the Responsibility of You, Me and All of Us,” organised by the Dhaka North City Corporation at the Gulshan Nagar Bhaban.

The local government minister said the head of government also had the goodwill to implement such an initiative on a city government, which would allow the city corporations to take more effective measures on cleanliness and waste management.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called on everyone to rise above political differences and work together, as citizens, to take Dhaka forward. He said he had already discussed with the prime minister the clearing and restoration of the Buriganga and Turag rivers, warning that it was impossible to save Dhaka without saving these rivers.

Stressing the need to make Dhaka liveable, the minister said citizens would have to be aware and build public resistance against those grabbing the rivers.

State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) chairman Engineer Riazul Islam and Dhaka WASA managing director Aminul Islam also spoke at the seminar, which was presided over by DNCC administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton.
